Part 5
Dev cried in Meera’s arms. He couldn’t stop himself. Maan had brought him up since he was 9, after their parents dismissal. Maan was his everything father mother, brother, philosopher, guide. It wouldn’t have been easy for a teenager to take up the responsibility of a little kid. But Maan did!! he sacrificed all his teenage life bringing him up. Taking care of Dev’s small small needs.
Meera didn’t know how to console Dev, she just cocooned him in her arms. After he was calm Meera – aapko Geet ke samne veerji ke barenme nahi bolna chaiya tha! Dev gave her a confused look meera – Geet abhi tho bahut choti hain, she has her whole life infront of her Dev nodded meera – agar wo aisen he veerji ke saat judi rahen gi tho unka kya hoga? Dev was still not understanding wat Meera was trying to say meera – I mean Geet should move on Dev got really furious & snapped – how could u? Wo bro ki biwi hai! Meera – nahi wo bro ki vidhwa hain abhi.. she is his widow. Dev couldn’t even think on those lines. He was still not able to come in terms with the reality Maan was no more & thinking of letting go his bro’s wife was no where is his thoughts!!
*************
Next day Daadi arranged for the rasoi rasam for Meera. Geet came down for her breakfast only to see Meera cooking something. Geet – aaren aapki haat ki mehendi bhi nahi utri aur aap yeh sab.. she said innocently to free her from the chores. Daadi – nahi beta yeh tho rasam hain.. shaadi ke baad sab ladkiyen yeh karti hain.. Daadi’s eyes welled up. Oh god wat did she just say. Geet looked uncomfortably & left from their. But those words ached her. Pained her though she didn’t want them to.. nor it was intended to. But she couldn’t help but cry silently on her fate.
Geet avoided being around not to create any unpleasant situation like the kitchen one in the morning.
There were so many small small things in life that have been snatched away from her life. These rituals r like sweet sweet memories in girls life to treasure but then there was only burning fire & its agony in her life now.. sometimes she still wondered why she chose this painful life over that momentary pain.
She walked in late, everyone was done with dinner she learned from Nakul kaka. She shied in relief & headed to her room refusing the dinner. As she passed Meera & dev’s room she heard them giggle. A smiled crept her lips.. before she could continue she heard Meeras moans followed with chotiyen na..geet gulped her saliva & walked away feeling awkward. That night she tried not to think abt wat she heard. She closed her eyes only to feel some craving within her. She squeezed her eyes tight & prayed.
After t restless night t morning sight was not something that would have helped.. Meera was drying her hair in the balcony.. & Dev came from behind to hold her close.. snuggling into a sweet morning session. Geet closed her eyes & ran back into the room. She closed her eyes but those moments played back infront of her eyes. She hit her hand then her head against wall trying to shut those images.. she felt sick..ashamed.. she looked at Maans portrait longingly. She wanted to complain why he left her like this.. but even that was not true.. she had all the chances to go with him.. but she betrayed him.. choosing this life.
These desire she felt was new to her. Not that she was not aware but so much had happened in last few months that she couldn’t feel anything then. & now when everything seemed to fall perfectly in place her ownself was falling out of place. As days passed her need seem to grow with her pain & she didn’t know how to sooth herself. She avoided looking at Maans portrait since she had began to imagine thinks which according to her was a sin now.
When thinks began to seem out of control she sort to meditation.. devotion.. she learned controlling her other aspects of life will help her sustain a better control over self. She slowly handed over the business to Dev spending more time on spiritual path.
It was 2 month after Dev’s wedding when Daadi came into Geets room. The sight broke Daadi even more than Maan’s death itself. T room was empty, just with a mat rolled up in t corner. Maans portrait hung in t room along with another zinda portrait of his widow. Geet looked so lifeless.. sleeping on the floor. Her food had become boiled vegetables… questioning Daadi of the choice she made to save this girl only to suffer like this. Geet seemed fine at the exterior when she sat with them, interacted with them but only now her loneliness hit Daadi. Every corner of t room screamed out her condition. Only now everyone understood why Geet slowly handed over everything to Dev, why she avoided having dinner together. The inner fight of herself to mere live!! was living so difficult??? that death seemed easier!!!
Meera those words sunk into Dev now. Even Daadi wanted to see Geet move on.
